ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND - The World Curling Federation (WCF) has announced that the World Men’s Curling Championship in 2012 has been awarded to the City of Basel in Switzerland. The event will be held from the 31st of March until the 8th of April in the St Jakob Halle.

The announcement was made by the World Curling Federation’s Executive Board as the European Championships were taking place in Aberdeen, Scotland. “The WCF was impressed with the quality of the host bids it received for this event,” said WCF President Les Harrison. “Basel’s submission met all the criteria – a bid fully supported by the City of Basel and the Swiss Olympic Association.”

“Since Basel hosted the European Curling Championships three years ago, we have been committed to trying to be awarded the World Men’s Championships in 2012,” said Bruno Schallberger, President of the organising committee for the event. “We’ve now harvested the fruit of our labours in the face of other very strong bids.”

The 2012 event will be staged in the St Jakob Halle which has a capacity for 5,000 spectators. The European Championships in 2006 drew big crowds to the city. The indications are that curling fans from around the world will travel to the Swiss city to watch the event.
